Winter Washing line Rig

It is hard to beat a winter washing line rig when the water cools down and the trout start hugging those deeper layers. Set it up right, and it becomes a lethal combination of depth control and supreme presentation.

You want to start with a Di3 sinking line to get your setup down into the zone where the fish are holding. Off the end of that, you are running a 7ft leader.

The real magic of the washing line is how it suspends your flies, and this specific spacing does the job brilliantly: tie your first booby 3ft up from the point of the Di3 line tip, and then put your second booby right on the point.

Because boobies float, that Di3 line will anchor the setup near the bottom while the buoyant foam eyes on your flies lift them up off the lake bed. When you retrieve it slowly with steady pulls and pauses, those boobies act like suspended baitfish or emerging buzzers hanging right in the trout’s line of sight. It is a brilliant, confidence-inspiring method for freezing days when everything else seems locked up.
