Fishing the Olive Cruncher
The Olive Cruncher is a nymph pattern, and as such, it is fished subsurface. It is an excellent “searching” pattern, meaning it can be used when you don’t know exactly what the fish are feeding on. Its versatility allows it to be presented in several ways:
Washing Line: This is a very popular method, especially on stillwaters. The Olive Cruncher is often placed on the point (the end of the leader) of a multi-fly cast, with a buoyant fly like a booby or dry fly on the dropper lines. This setup allows the cruncher to sink and fish at a specific depth, while the booby or dry fly acts as a strike indicator and helps to keep the leader straight.
Static or Slow Retrieve: The fly can be fished on a floating line with a long leader and retrieved very slowly, often with a subtle figure-of-eight motion. This mimics the natural movement of a nymph or pupa as it rises through the water column.
Fast Retrieve: When fish are actively feeding on fast-moving prey, a faster, more aggressive retrieve can be effective. This can imitate a fry or a caddis larva zipping through the water.
The Olive Cruncher is a proven and effective fly that belongs in the box of any stillwater angler. Its simple but imitative design and its adaptability to various fishing methods make it a consistently reliable choice for catching trout.
